Today, Laredo ISD proudly celebrates the newly constructed J. A. Kawas Elementary School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The state-of-the-art $16.4M campus will feature 31 instructional classrooms from Pre-K - fifth grade, three computer labs, two science labs, a music room, cafeteria and full kitchen prep, administrative offices, library media center, gymnasium, nurses’ station, drop off/pick up lanes for students, parking lot improvements, security fencing and facility access control, covered canopies, and two courtyards.
Designed by Cavazos Architects and built by Leyendecker Construction, the new Kawas Elementary School is a significant milestone for the mighty Armadillos!

Nixon High School senior girls’ Track/Field Shot Put athlete Katelyn Reese signed her NLI to continue her academic and Shot-Put career at Mount Marty University in South Dakota. She will major in Education and Kinesiology.
Congratulations to Jose Quintana and Yeikol Chapa of Nixon High School who have the prestigious honor of being named 2024 Terry Scholars by the Terry Foundation. The two Nixon seniors earned admission to two of the biggest universities in Texas and will be attending college on a full-ride scholarship for up to eight semesters from the Terry Foundation.


The Laredo Independent School District held a day of remembrance to honor all fallen war heroes, Prisoners of War (POW), and Missing in Action (MIA). Nixon High School JROTC Cadets participated in a Roll Call of all fallen American Heroes, POW, and MIA, followed by the playing of patriotic music by the Memorial Middle School Band and “TAPS” by retired Trevino Magnet School Instructor Roberto “Bobby” Lopez. The Combine Law Enforcement Honor Guard conducted a 21 Gun Salute. LISD Board Vice-President Rudy Morales, LISD Board Parliamentarian Goyo Lopez, and LISD Superintendent Dr. Sylvia Rios placed a wreath in memory of the fallen soldiers.
Fine Arts students from the Mustang Team demonstrated their musical talents during the Fine Arts Showcase at the LISD PAC Auditorium. The student sang and danced as their parents, family members, and principals cheered them on.
Yesterday's Toro Team Showcase was a spectacular display of talent and pride! The LISD Performing Arts Auditorium was filled with the spirit of the Pride ofSouth Laredo as dance, mariachi, band, and cheer teams dazzled everyone with their performance. #lisdistheplacetobe

Nixon High School senior track and field athlete Rylie Gaona signed her National Letter of Intent (NLI) with Southwestern College. Gaona will continue her academic and track career at Southwestern College in Winfield Kansas. Rylie will be majoring in Early Childhood Education.

Congratulations to LISD's Student of the Month for April Jaylyn Gonzalez.Gonzalez is an eighth-grade student at Lamar Middle School. She is a proud member of the Mighty Lion Volleyball team.
Her favorite part of the school day is when she gets to go to athletes because she is able to work out and exercise.
In her free time Jaylyn likes to draw, and play volleyball and softball.
She plans on attending Nixon High School. Her main goal is to graduate from college and to hopefully become a nurse to help others.
She attended Gallego Elementary School. Her parent are Vanessa Garza and Fernando Gonzalez.
