Reading is sweet! Laredo Independent School District Top Accelerated Readers were recognized for their exceptional efforts in reaching their goal during the LISD Board of Trustees recent meeting. A round of applause honored Top Elementary Student Aiden Martinez, 4th grader at Santa Maria Elementary School and Top Middle School Student Leilene Gomez, 8th grader at Lamar Middle School. Top First Place Kinder through Eighth Grade Students received a 40” Smart T.V., certificate, medal, and a goodie bag for their academic achievement and reading success. The top students include: Dovalina Elementary School Marco Renteria - Kinder; Don Jose Gallego Elementary School Crystal Nevarez - First Grade; Alma Pierce Elementary School Regina Rossel Rivera - Second Grade; Alma Pierce Elementary School Jaylah Zavala - Third Grade; Santa Maria Elementary School Aiden Martinez - Fourth Grade; Milton Elementary School Daniel Martinez - Fifth Grade; Memorial Middle School Katelyn Uribe - Sixth Grade; Lamar Middle School Ana Rios Sanchez - Seventh Grade; and Lamar Middle School Leilene Gomez - Eighth Grade. “Congratulations to all the Top AR district students!” LISD Library and Media Services Director Mely Paez said. “I would also like to thank all teachers, librarians, administrators, and support staff for working with our students to ensure they met the district's AR goals/expectations.”

Summer Internship Program Update: The first Laredo ISD Kazen Fellows cohort composed of 10 high school students had a special visitor this week. The 24th U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas Alamdar Hamdani spoke to the students about their aspirations on pursing a career in law. Additionally, three LISD Office of Communications and Instructional Television interns had the opportunity to interview U.S District Judge for the Sourthern District of Texas Diana Saldaña and Mr. Hamdani on the success and importance of the program.

The U.S. Southern District of Texas Laredo Division welcomes the first LISD Kazen Fellows cohort! Ten high school students were selected to study under the direction of U.S District Judge Diana Saldaña. For the next six weeks, students will have the opportunity to learn about the American Judicial System, Federal and State Courthouse Procedures, Overviews of Municipal Law, Mock Trial Preparations, among other topics. Students will also be able to listen to informative presentations by guest speakers such as Webb County Attorneys, Federal Judges, U.S. Marshal Services, News Media, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, and others.

They signed their National Letter of Intent to continue their academic and football career at the University of Dubuque in Dubuque Iowa. Ya-aqob Lozano has chosen to major in sports management while David Garza has chosen kinesiology.
