The graduating Class of 2025 from Laredo Independent School District is closing out the school year with a milestone worth celebrating. This year’s graduates received nearly $33 million in scholarships awarded.

This collective achievement spans all four high schools, with Martin High School students earning more than $3 million, Cigarroa High School securing an estimated $5 million, Nixon High School with a total or more than $11 million, and Garcia Early College High School topping the list with over $12 million in awarded funds.

Among the many prestigious recognitions, LISD proudly celebrates four LISD seniors have been selected as 2025 recipients of the Gates Scholarship, one of the most prestigious and competitive scholarships in the nation. Manuel Gomez and Matthew Ramon of Nixon High School, Natalie Gonzalez of Martin High School, and Mia Cuevas of Garcia Early College High School have added another accolade to their academic achievements. The students will be attending their dream school on a full scholarship.

LISD Guidance and Counseling/At-Risk Population Director Cindy Dominguez stated: “Behind every scholarship awarded is a story of determination and belief. Our counselors have guided, encouraged, and empowered these students every step of the way. This moment proves that dreams, when matched with effort and opportunity, lead to life-changing outcomes.”

High school seniors were awarded scholarships by community partners such as LULAC Council, McDonald’s, High School Class Groups, QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship, Terry Scholarship, Dr. Sam Giese Scholarship, San Antonio Area Foundation, U.S. Military Armed Forces, and many more. Additionally, students were offered generous scholarships by Texas A&M International University, University of Texas at Austin, St. Mary’s University, University of the Incarnate Word, University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley, Texas State, Rice University, Notre Dame University, University of North Texas, Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, amongst others.

Close to 1,500 LISD High School students who completed all requirements for graduation will receive their diplomas during commencement exercises. Graduating ceremonies for Martin, Nixon, and Cigarroa High School will be on Tuesday, May 27th at the Sames Auto Arena. Garcia Early College High School will hold its commencement on Monday, May 26th, at 10:00 a.m. at the LISD Performing Arts Complex Auditorium.

Dr. Sylvia G. Rios, LISD Superintendent of Schools, expressed her pride in the achievements of the Class of 2025, stating, "Every scholarship represents a student who dared to dream and followed through with purpose. It is a reflection of their courage, their goals, and the people who believed in them along the way. This is what public education is meant to do: help students reach beyond what they thought was possible.”
