Out of more than 200 student vocalists from across the country, Christen Middle School’s Mikayla Villarreal has advanced to the semifinal round of the 31st Annual Mariachi Extravaganza National Vocal Competition.
Young performers from states including California, Nevada, and Texas registered for this prestigious event. From that talented group, only about 30 students were selected to move forward to the semifinals.
Mikayla, a gifted sixth-grade vocalist and member of Mariachi Los Tigrillos de Oro, will represent Christen Middle School on Thursday, December 4, at the Lila Cockrell Theater in San Antonio, Texas. She will take the stage alongside some of the most promising mariachi vocalists in the nation.

“Mikayla has shown exceptional growth and dedication to her music,” said CMS Mariachi Director Ruben Guadian. “Her voice, discipline, and passion for mariachi set her apart. We are excited to see her shine on the national stage.”
The Mariachi Extravaganza is recognized as one of the premier mariachi festivals in the United States. The event provides young performers with an opportunity to showcase their artistry and celebrate the cultural significance of mariachi music.
"I am very happy and excited to be participating in Mariachi Extravaganza! I know being there is a privilege, and I feel blessed to represent mariachi music, my school, my roots, and my family. I thank God and all in charge for this opportunity, and I will give it my all!" Mikayla said.
LISD congratulates Mikayla on this outstanding accomplishment and wishes her success as she prepares for her semifinal performance in San Antonio.
