Laredo Independent School District Athletic Department announced the naming of the new coach for Girls’ Basketball at Nixon High School. Israel Lerma has been promoted as the new girls’ basketball coach at Nixon High School.
“I want to thank NHS Principal Cassandra Mendoza, and Nixon and LISD Administration for entrusting me with this new role,” said Lerma. “Words cannot describe the excitement I feel to embark on this new journey and continue the success of the program.”
Coach Lerma has been part of the L.I.S.D family for 28 years working at Leyendecker Elementary and Ryan Elementary Schools, and Nixon High School as a Physical Education teacher. He has extensive experience in basketball having been an assistant coach at Nixon High School for the last 17 years. He has worked under Coach Archie Ramos, Pete Solis Jr., and LeaAnn Mendoza who have guided him and prepared him for this leadership role.
“Coach Lerma is a servant leader who aspires to elevate traditions at Nixon High School,” said Luis Escamilla, LISD Assistant Athletic Director. “He demonstrates resilience and inspires student-athletes to achieve greatness in academics and in athletics.”
Lerma is a proud product of LISD schools graduating from Martin High School. He attended Texas A&M International University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Special Education and his master’s degree in Educational Administration.
Coach Lerma is married to Annany Lerma, who is a counselor at Nixon High School. They have two basketball loving boys, Issy and Isaac, who also attend LISD schools.
