Within every school library lies more than bookshelves and resources. It is a place where curiosity is sparked, confidence is built, and students discover their voice. At Sanchez Ochoa Elementary School, that space has been brought to life through the dedication of Ana Teresa Garcia, who was named Laredo ISD’s 2025-2026 Librarian of the Year during the district’s National Library Week Proclamation Luncheon.
With 36 years of experience in education, including nine years as a librarian, Garcia has become a cornerstone of her campus community, blending instructional leadership with genuine care for students and staff.
Garcia’s work extends far beyond the daily operations of a library. She actively collaborates with teachers to align lessons with curriculum goals while ensuring students meet key reading milestones. Her approach reflects a commitment not only to academic achievement but to creating an environment where students of all reading levels feel capable and empowered.
“As the initial disbelief settles, what remains is a simple and beautiful truth: dedication. I go to work each day with an open heart because the library is the heart of the school, a place where every student is a traveler waiting to depart,” she said.
Her dedication to student success is especially evident in her proactive efforts to support struggling readers. Recognizing a need for early intervention, Garcia launched a pilot program focused on helping kindergarten students master sight words and leveled reading skills. The initiative has already shown measurable growth in student performance and is set to expand to additional grade levels in the coming year.
Beyond academics, Garcia has created a culture of engagement that reaches across the entire campus. From organizing highly anticipated AR kick-offs and District Reading Fair preparations to stepping in as a Spelling Bee sponsor, she consistently creates opportunities for students to grow and shine.
Her leadership is equally evident in her relationships with colleagues. Known for her collaborative spirit, Garcia works seamlessly with staff and administration, often volunteering her time to support campus needs. Her willingness to step in wherever needed has made her a trusted and valued member of the school community.
“Being recognized by Laredo ISD as Librarian of the Year for 2025–2026 is a meaningful thank you from my administrators and directors for the decades of love I’ve poured into my work and my students. But the real reward is seeing a child’s eyes light up when they discover a story that changes their world, just as I once did. Instilling a love of reading is not just about literacy, it is about giving students the keys to every avenue and the tickets to every journey they will ever want to take,” Garcia said.
Garcia also prioritizes family and community engagement, transforming the library into a welcoming hub through events such as Family Reading Nights and “Reading with a Loved One.” These initiatives strengthen connections between school and home while promoting a lifelong love of reading.
Each morning, Garcia greets students by name with her signature “Buenos días, Corazón-zon,” setting a positive tone for the day. This simple yet meaningful gesture reflects her belief in nurturing the whole child and ensuring every student feels valued from the moment they arrive on campus.
“She’s a librarian with a big heart and a strong belief in her students, always encouraging them to try their best and never give up. As part of a successful leadership team, she steps up wherever she’s needed and goes above and beyond to support every child, making a lasting difference in their journey,”said Marcia Martinez, Sanchez-Ochoa Elementary School Principal.
As part of the celebration, LISD librarians and librarian assistants were recognized for their contributions to student learning and literacy. The district continues to honor the vital role libraries play in shaping educational experiences and supporting student success.
“Ana Teresa Garcia is the heart of Sanchez Ochoa Elementary and a true example of what it means to serve students with passion and purpose. Through her innovative literacy initiatives, including targeted support for early readers and a proactive approach to intervention, she is helping our students truly level up their literacy,” LISD Library and Media Services Director Mely Paez said. “Ms. Garcia goes beyond the library walls—building a culture of reading, engaging families, and supporting her entire school community with a servant-leader mindset. Her dedication, compassion, and commitment to excellence make a lasting impact on every student she serves, and she is most deserving of being named Librarian of the Year.”
