The M. B. Lamar Middle School Chess Team made a powerful opening move at the 1st LISD Chess Invitational Tournament, showcasing exceptional strategy, focus, and sportsmanship against competitors from across the district.
Demonstrating sharp tactical mindsets throughout every round, the Lions fought hard on the chessboard to secure top individual standings in the tournament:
Gabriel Garza earned the highest individual score in the entire tournament, sweeping his matches to finish with a remarkable 5 points.
Venice Gonzalez delivered an equally impressive performance, tying for the second-highest individual score with 4 points.
The team’s success highlights both individual dedication and strong group preparation under the guidance of head coach Mr. Martinez Alfaro, who supported and mentored the players throughout the competition.
"We are incredibly proud of the hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship our entire chess team demonstrated throughout the tournament," Mr. Martinez shared. "Each of our Lions represented Lamar with pride and gave it their best from start to finish!"
Congratulations to Coach Martinez Alfaro, Gabriel, Venice, and all of the Lamar Lions Chess Team members on a triumphant first tournament showing!
