Lamar Middle School is celebrating a major literacy achievement as Mr. Mancillas’ 7th grade students have officially been named the Top Accelerated Reader (A.R.) Class on campus for the current grading period. This recognition reflects not only the dedication of the students, but also the strong collaboration between teachers and support staff who share a love for reading and student growth.

At the heart of this success is Mr. Mancillas, a teacher who believes that books are more than assignments. He treats reading as an experience that invites students to dream, explore, and imagine beyond their daily routine. His classroom philosophy centers on the idea that a student may not always have the opportunity to see the world firsthand, but a book can still place that world in their hands.

“My goal is to show them that reading is a form of power,” explained Mr. Mancillas. “If you cannot get on a plane, you can open a book and walk the streets of Paris or understand the science behind flight. Knowledge gives you confidence, and confidence unlocks opportunities in every direction.”

This achievement would not have been possible without the invaluable support of Lamar Middle School librarian Ms. Loranca. She has played a key role in helping students discover books that speak to their interests. Whether recommending the next great adventure novel or helping students track their A.R. progress, she has served as a constant encourager in the reading journey.

Additional support also came from Ms. R. Gomez, who partnered with Mr. Mancillas throughout the A.R. challenge. She provided guidance, accountability, and an extra push of motivation when students needed it most. Together, these educators created an environment where reading was not treated as a grade, but as a source of inspiration.

Students in this class have gone above and beyond by embracing reading as something personal rather than something required. They discuss plots as if they were real adventures, debate character choices as if they were friends or rivals, and recommend books to one another with genuine excitement. Their enthusiasm has set an example for the rest of the campus.

The success of this A.R. class demonstrates what can happen when teachers, librarians, and support staff unite with a shared mission. It also serves as a reminder that one great book can change a student’s entire perspective.

Lamar Middle School congratulates Mr. Mancillas, Ms. Loranca, Ms. R. Gomez, and the remarkable students who made this achievement possible. Their hard work proves that when students discover the joy of reading, there is no limit to where their minds can go.
