The Laredo Independent School District welcomes Sylvia Moreno as the new principal of L. J. Christen Middle School, the very campus where her educational journey began.

Moreno launched her career in education as a middle school Science teacher at Christen, where she taught sixth through eighth grade for 12 years. In 2003, she stepped into campus leadership as assistant principal at J. Z. Leyendecker Elementary, marking the beginning of her impactful administrative path.

With over 22 years of administrative leadership, Moreno has guided learners from every corner of the district. She first strengthened family-school partnerships as Parental Involvement Coordinator, then honed her skills in secondary leadership as assistant principal at Cigarroa High School, Nixon High School, and Memorial Middle School, where she oversaw curriculum planning, student support, and campus operations. Her impact deepened when she became principal of A. T. Dovalina Elementary, where she championed literacy growth and fostered a culture of learning. Most recently, she led F. S. Lara Academy, LISD’s alternative education campus, for three years, focusing on implementing restorative practices and second-chance pathways that helped students re-engage with their education.

A proud graduate of Raymond and Tirza Martin High School, Moreno earned her bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M International University. She holds certifications in Secondary Biology, English as a Second Language Supplemental, Principal, and Superintendent. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University in College Station.

Now stepping into her new role at Christen, Moreno says the return feels like coming home. “Christen is where it all started for me, not just as an educator, but as someone learning how to lead, connect, and grow alongside students,” said Moreno. “This campus helped shape who I am today, and I’m excited to walk these halls again, this time with a mission to inspire the next generation of learners and leaders. Together, we’ll build on the traditions of excellence and make space for new ideas and brighter possibilities for Cub Nation.”

Laredo ISD celebrates Sylvia Moreno’s appointment and looks forward to the continued success and vibrant leadership she brings to the Christen Middle School community.
