Week of the Young Child Proclamation

From the first whistle to the final high-five, Shirley Field transformed into a space where imagination led the way and every step was filled with excitement. Laredo ISD launched its Week of the Young Child with the 14th Annual All-Star Kids Day, bringing together its youngest learners for a morning centered on exploration, play, and possibility.

All-Star Kids Day is more than a morning of play. It reflects the meaningful learning experiences taking place in early childhood classrooms across the district. With colorful stations, music, and laughter throughout the field, the event set the tone for a week dedicated to celebrating creativity, curiosity, and growth at all LISD elementary campuses.

All 20 LISD elementary schools and over 2,000 students participated in the event. The kickoff began with City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño proclaiming March 30th through April 3rd as the Week of the Young Child at LISD. Student volunteers from Garcia Early College, Cigarroa, Martin, and Nixon High Schools joined in, guiding younger students through activities and creating moments of mentorship and connection. From bowling and dancing to frisbee challenges, the field came alive with movement and excitement.

The celebration continues throughout the week across campuses, where students in Pre-K 3, Pre-K 4, and kindergarten take part in themed activities including picnics, Science Day, art projects, and other engaging experiences designed to support both learning and joy during the earliest years of education.

“Week of the Young Child brings attention to the foundation we build in these early years, and All-Star Kids Day creates a space where learning and joy come together in a powerful way,” said Victoria Camacho, LISD Early Childhood Dean. “When students are given opportunities to explore, move, and interact with others, they begin to develop confidence and curiosity that carry into the classroom. This event shows our students that school is a place where they belong, where they can grow, and where their future begins. None of this could be possible without our amazing teachers who guide them to be the leaders they can be.”

The event also welcomed community partners, including the Laredo Police Department, Laredo Fire Department, H-E-B, FedEx Freight, Target, McCoy’s Building Supplies, Texas A&M International University, City of Laredo Animal Care Center, and many more. Their participation gave students the chance to meet role models and learn about the many ways they can contribute to their community in the future.

According to the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children, the Week of the Young Child highlights the needs of young children and their families while recognizing the programs and services that support early learning. Each year, LISD’s Early Childhood Department organizes activities that inspire students and encourage families to stay actively involved in their child’s education.

Families are also encouraged to take the next step. LISD offers full-day early childhood education in all 20 of its elementary campuses, plus free transportation and meals. Online registration for new and returning students is now open. Parents can visit laredoisd.org and select “Online Registration.” The process is available in both English and Spanish for students from Pre-K 3 through 12th grade.
