Summer Reading

Summer is finally here, Laredo ISD! The sun is shining, the school bells are silent, and the days are wide open. While it is the perfect time to relax and hang out with friends, it is also the ultimate season to unlock a secret superpower: reading.

This year, we are challenging every student across our district to step up, grab a book, and take on the Summer Reading Challenge. It is not about tests or grades—it is about discovering new worlds, sharpening your mind, and setting yourself up for massive success.

🧠The Ultimate Brain Workout

Think of reading like training for your favorite sport or video game. If you stop practicing for three months, your skills get a little rusty. Teachers call this the "summer slide," but you can think of it as losing your competitive edge.

Spending just 15 to 20 minutes a day with a book keeps your brain in peak condition. Here is exactly what happens when you dive into a great story this summer:

  • Supercharged Fluency: Reading regularly helps you read smoother and faster. Words start to jump off the page effortlessly, making everything you read easier to understand.

  • Massive Vocabulary & Language Skills: Every book is packed with new words and unique expressions. Whether you are learning English, mastering Spanish, or becoming fully bilingual, reading builds the language bridges that help you express yourself like a pro.

  • Unstoppable Imagination: One day you are solving a mystery on the streets of a futuristic city, and the next you are learning the history of our own vibrant borderland. Books take you places a screen simply cannot.

❓Did You Know?

Reading just 4 to 5 books over the summer can completely prevent summer learning loss and actually give you a head start for the next school year.

How to Crush the Challenge

The best part about summer reading? You choose the journey. There are no assigned textbook chapters here.

  1. Read What You Love: Graphic novels, sports biographies, sci-fi adventures, manga, or historical fiction—it all counts!

  2. Make it a Routine: Read under a shady tree at the park, cool off with a book indoors during the hot afternoon, or read right before bed.

  3. Visit Your Library: Check out the incredible resources at your school’s digital library or visit the public library to stack up on fresh titles.
