Martin High School Cheerleaders win awards at NCA Camp

The Martin High School Cheer Team have productively begun their season working on their skills, perfecting their technique and routines, and winning top awards.

Most recently, the squad attended the National Cheerleaders Association Camp at Texas A& M International University. The MHS Cheer program, under the direction of Carl Medina and Kimberly Gonzalez, along with the Tiger Cheer Group received numerous honors, claiming the most prestigious NCA Spirit Stick.

Competing and showcasing their talents among nationally ranked squads from all over the State of Texas, MHS Tigers were able to learn difficult routines and cheers that included cutting edge skills and choreography for their upcoming season. The team won Superior ribbons in Cheer, Chant, and Band Chant Performance.

The team also received the Jumps Technical of Excellence award and the Band Chant Award.  The Tiger Cheerleaders were extremely honored to receive the Herkie Award, two nights in a row, which is voted by the teams attending the camp.  This award was given to the squad that exemplified team unity and being a positive influence at the camp.  The final day of camp at the awards presentation, the Martin Cheerleaders were awarded the coveted NCA Megaphone, entitled the NCA Spirit Award, which was also voted by the entire camp and camp staff. This award went to the squad that showed support to the squad members attending the camp, exemplified true morals and values, and was spirited throughout the whole camp.

The cheerleaders also received a bid to NCA Nationals in Dallas, Texas this upcoming January, where they will compete against the best in the nation.

Individual awards were also presented at NCA, (Seniors) Kendra Ramirez, Sarinah Ponce, Miranda Mena (Juniors) Victoria Mendoza, Saribelle Lopez, Daisy Cruz, Connie Diaz, Michelle Garcia, (Sophomores) Sharleen Garza, Paulina Lopez, Esmeralda Garcia, and (Freshman) Lizeth Martinez. All were nominated to the NCA All-American team. These young ladies have all been invited to perform at the Citrus Bowl, the Varsity Spectacular at Walt Disney World, and perform at the London or Rome New Year’s Parade.

A very special recognition went out to Co-Captain Victoria Mendoza who was chosen by the NCA instructors as the “Pin It Forward” Leader, for displaying true leadership with her teammates and other squads attending the camp. She was also the Individual Leadership Award recipient for exemplifying true leadership and sportsmanship throughout the entire camp.

“It was a great honor to be selected for this award,” Mendoza said.  “My coaches are incredible and supportive in allowing me to help lead the squad. The squad is comprised of incredibly talented young ladies and we are excited for this upcoming cheer season.”

In addition, MHS Cheer Sponsors were also recognized at the awards presentation, Carl S. Medina was named the “Outstanding Veteran” for his time and dedication to the cheerleading industry and Kimberly Gonzalez was awarded the Herkie award for being a positive influence on all teams and coaches at this year’s camp.

The Martin High School Cheerleaders enjoyed their experience at NCA summer camp and are already preparing for this upcoming cheer season. “The squad were amazing at camp and it was great to get recognized by other teams and the NCA staff,” Medina said.  The team and coaches are so proud of our Co-Captain Victoria Mendoza for garnering the Individual Leadership award, we are proud she believes in her team and wants to see them succeed as well as other cheerleading programs.  As sponsors this is a first for our team, having 12 girls nominated from our 17 member cheer program is beyond exciting, we see great things coming from this squad and cannot wait to see what’s to come,” Medina added.
