Superintendent

November 2, 2020

Dear Laredo ISD Family,

There is no doubt that it has thus far, been a challenging, yet rewarding time of year for LISD.  Over the last several weeks, we have transitioned to in-class instruction with approximately 2,035 of our students opting to return to their classrooms while another 22,015 are instructionally engaged through the District’s remote learning platforms. Kudos to all teachers, staff, and parents who have worked diligently to shape the delivery of instruction to our students under the limited conditions imposed by the times in which we live.

Nonetheless, across our District, we have seen students and staff rise to the challenges of a new normal, and in true steadfast LISD fashion, we have been able to thrive even under the most harrowing uncertainties of our time. Such is the case as LISD students and staff celebrated the naming of Heights and Leyendecker Elementary Schools when they officially joined the ranks of the U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon Schools for the 2020 school year. Their selection increased the number of elite LISD schools to eight, after having earned the Blue Ribbon distinction of exemplary state and national student performance.

To cap the beginning of another school year, our fall varsity athletic programs have welcomed a return to competitive football, volleyball, tennis and cross-country activities. Band, cheer and dance team activities have also made the leap into our fall lineup of student performances, and we continue to look forward to increased student participation in UIL activities while the virtual world of performance has now become a new voice for our students as well as staff. I am sure that students participating in these events, as well as their parents and spectators, are thankful for the attention to detail that has been paid by our coaches, directors, sponsors, and administrators in being ever mindful of the responsibility that we share to keep all safe and healthy.

As Superintendent of Schools, I am proud of each and every student, teacher, and staff member who, along with our community, contributed their efforts towards our Texas Education Agency Recognized School District accountability rating. With this being said, 20 of our schools earned an Exemplary School rating, while 7 earned a Recognized School rating. These performance outcomes mark the many services and programs LISD has implemented every year to support our students and staff.

At the helm of such steadfast efforts, our LISD Board of Trustees has worked in unison to realize the vision of excellence defining our efforts as educators and members of our LISD family. Their unyielding support underlines the many opportunities which have become available to our students, their families, and our staff. Whether these opportunities include our free dual enrollment university course initiatives available at every high school or our award-winning Child Nutrition Program serving millions of meals over the course of the school year, our District has worked tirelessly to provide our students with a quality education in a safe and healthy learning environment.

As we know, many hands lighten the load. To this end, kudos to our Maintenance, Facilities & Operations staff as well as those who deliver their services as members of our LISD Transportation, Student Services, Human Resources, Finance, Technology and Communications Departments. These teams work, every hour of every day, to support our students, staff and our community, and this has especially been the case, during the pandemic. Of course, we are also thankful and indebted to our many community partners who have extended their own services to our LISD family of students and educators.

There is no doubt that there is still much to do in the weeks to come. It is my sincere hope that you will join us in celebrating what we have thus far achieved, while working towards what is to come.  Our schools, students and staff will need your help and patience as we work to fully reopen our schools when it is safe to do so. With this being said, the safety and well-being of our students, as well as our LISD family, remains at the core of what we do as educators. We understand that you have entrusted us with your most precious belonging, your children. To this end, we wholeheartedly commit ourselves to this responsibility while serving their educational needs in the best way possible.

At this time, I kindly ask that you continue to monitor the attendance of our students whether they report to their classrooms in-person or engage in remote learning. Please know that your efforts and partnership are truly appreciated as we continue to move through the year. The next few weeks will surely require all of us to work together to insure the success of every student who has made LISD their home. I am confident that we will persevere regardless of the challenges that lie before us because we are one family--- LISD strong, proud and ready. May you be blessed with much love, joy, and good health in the days and weeks to come.

Respectfully,

Dr. Sylvia G. Rios
