What You need to know
about TITLE I
How does TITLE I
work?
The Federal Government
provides funding to states each year for TITLE I, to get funds; each
state must submit a plan describing:
ü
What children are
expected to know
ü
The high quality
standards of performance that all children are expected to meet
ü
Ways to measure
progress
The State Educational
Agencies (SEA”S) send
the money to the district based on the number of low-income
families.
The local school
district (called a “Local Education Agency,” or LEA) identifies eligible schools—those
with the highest percentage of children from low- income
families—and provides Title I resources.
THE TITLE I school
(this includes parents, teachers, administrators and other school
staff) works to:
ü
Identify students most
in need of educational help (students do not have to be from
low-income families to be helped.)
ü
Set goals for
improvement
ü
Develop programs that
add to the regular classroom instruction
ü
Try to involve parents
in all aspects of the program
The school’s TITLE I
program is reviewed each year by administrators and parents. If the GOALS are NOT met,
the plans must be revised.
ABOUT TITLE I
What is Title
I?
It is the largest
federal aid program for our nation’s schools
The GOAL of TITLE I is
a high quality education for every child, so the program
provides extra help and instruction to students who need it the
most. Those children
who are the furthest from meeting the standards the state has set
for all children. Title
I resources are directed to schools with high poverty
levels.
The program serves
millions of children in the elementary and
secondary schools each year.
Most districts participate. Title I also serves children
who attend parochial and private schools.
Why should I know
about TITLE I?
Because it can make a
difference in many lives!
TITLE I CAN
HELP:
Children do better in school and feel
better about themselves.
Parents understand their
children better.
Parents can also have more say about their children’s
education.
Teachers who can benefit from
the suggestions and support that parents offer and from the
satisfaction of seeing children succeed.
