Headline: Special Olympians compete on March 7

LISD Special Olympians go for the gold on Thurs., March 7, at Shirley Field. Competition begins at 8 a.m. and should finish by 11:30 a.m. All the athletes will be invited to a luncheon and dance at the Casa Blanca Ballroom following the competition.

Over 300 athletes from throughout LISD are expected at the 35th annual competition. This year's competition is dedicated to the memory of Rosario Carmichael, who died this past February. Carmichael, who dedicated over 40 years of service to LISD, was special education director.

"LISD would like to thank all the athletes and their parents for giving them the opportunity to participate in this event. Special Olympics gives our athletes the feeling of being challenged," notes Irma Guardiola, LISD Supervisor/Diagnostician in charge of Special Olympics. "Athletes who win on Friday will travel to Arlington, Tx., in April to compete in the Texas Special Olympics."

Representatives from the U.S. Border Patrol, Laredo Police Department, U.S. Immigration and Webb County Sheriff¹s Department will volunteer at the LISD Special Olympics.

A breakfast will be held in the ROTC building for all volunteers at 7 a.m. Organizing the breakfast are Jennifer Tristan, Marilyn B. Giese, Mario Robledo, Dolores Olivares, Jesus Estrada, Laura Gomez, Cecilia Reyna, Adriana Ornelas, Diana Ramirez, Cecilia Gamez, Leonor Ramon, Doris Lohmer and Patricia Peña.

Patricia San Miguel will be mistress of ceremonies. Supervisors for the competitions are Graciela Arce, Felipe Arroyo, Jr., and Adriana Lopez. Also assisting are Irma Guardiola, Yolanda Rios, Humberto Perez, Margie Villarreal, Gladys Pierluissi and Georgeanne Reuthinger.

Preparing the awards are Barbara Charles, Melissa Charo, Patricia Munson, Alma R. Hale and Maria Elena Tilton. In charge of the printed program are Cynthia Cogburn, Angie de la Garza, Diana L. Molina, Rebecca Morales, Laura Gonzalez, Ricardo Martinez, Pilar York, Christina Gutierrez and Glenn David La Fleur.

Responsible for the ball for distance field events are Melissa Aguayo, Maria G. Cervantes, Darlene Baker, Sandra Cortez, Claudette Gallegos and Lorena Vigil. Carmelo Gonzalez is in charge of the softball throw. Starters for the running events Gogi Gutierrez, Isidro Garcia, Jerry Molina and Jamie Gonzalez. Finishing judges are Pablo Castillo and students from TAMIU.

Lupita Gonzalez, Julian Del Valle, Dolores Espinoza, Elia Briseño, Yolanda Almeida, Frances Puente, Diana Cuellar and Elsa Palacios will serve refreshments. Serving the lunch are Maribel Cantu, Annie Escamilla, Claudia Dovalina, Teresa Lira, Lourdes Sanchez, Diana Perez, Pedro Zamarripa, Diana Peralta, Armando Moncivais, Ana Laura Sanchez and students from Nixon High School.
