CTE Overview

Laredo Independent School District offers a wide range of occupational programs at the secondary level. Career and Technical Education offers a sequence of courses which are directly related to the preparation of individuals for employment in current or emerging occupations requiring other than a baccalaureate or advanced degree. Such programs include competency-based applied learning, which contributes to an individual’s general knowledge, higher-order reasoning, problem solving skills, work attitude, general employability skills (SCANS Skills), and the occupational specific skills necessary for economic independence as a productive and contributing member of society.

Program offerings include Agricultural Science, Business, Career Orientation, Family & Consumer Sciences, Health Science, Marketing, Technology Education and Trades & Industrial Education (Welding, Auto Technology, Building Trades, Automotive Collision Repair & Refinishing, Cosmetology, Industrial Cooperative Training, Computer Maintenance Technician and Law Enforcement). The method of instruction is primarily through a Pre-Employment Laboratory setting with cooperative work/study programs available in Business, Marketing, and Industrial Training.

In an effort to provide real world experiences to our students, several partnerships with business and industry have developed. These partnerships provide a tremendous opportunity for our students to apply competencies learned in the classroom in a real world application experience. Partnerships presently in place include School-to-Careers, LCC-Tech Prep, Texas State Technical College, South Texas Workforce, St. Phillip’s College, and Texas A & M Extension Service.

Laredo Medical Center, University of Texas Medical Health Center, Holiday Inn Civic Center, Marriott Courtyard, Texas Department of Transportation, Workforce Solutions of South Texas, Sames Motor Company, and numerous other businesses in our community provide employment for our students through our cooperative education program.

Students have an opportunity to earn industry recognized certificates through intensive training in the classroom through concurrent enrollment and/or a seamless transition program in partnership with Laredo Community College. Certificates/licenses available to CTE students include Adobe Certification, MicroSoft Office Specialist (MOS), Construction, Nursing Assistant, Teacher Assistant, OSHA, Auto Mechanics, Cosmetology, and Food Managers.

It is a policy of the Laredo Independent School District not to descriminate on the basis of sex, handicap, race, color, or national origin in its educational and vocational programs, activities or employment as required by Title IX, Section 504 and Title VI, and will take steps to secure the lack of English language skills will not be a barrier to admission and participation in all education and vocational programs.
